If you look up help and ideas for starting a blog, you’ll likely come across a lot of valuable resources. From free graphic design programs to logo makers, there are a lot of tools out there that you can use to get your blog started. In addition to the tools, there are articles galore that promise to help you take your blog from a hobby to a business in as little time possible. Other bloggers share information about the income they make from their blog (sometimes up to $5,000 a month or more), and they promise to help you do the same too.
While many of those resources can be useful, not all of them contain the information that you need to get your blog going and start making money. Other bloggers may share their income statements and tell you that you can get there too, but they don’t always give you actionable information that you can use to do the same. Don’t give up just yet, though. We’ve put together some actionable tips to help you get from A to Z including putting your blog together and earning money every month.
Decide on a niche. With so many different blogs out there, you can’t write a general blog and stand out. You have to pick a topic or niche to blog about and work on that. So, instead of traveling, you might write about traveling on a budget, or instead of cooking and baking, you might write about cooking dinners for two.
Pick the platform you want to use. There are a lot of different blogging platforms out there that you can choose from, but one of the most popular is WordPress. In fact, WordPress is the CMS used by almost 75 million websites. Whichever platform you choose to use, be sure you test each one out to decide which is best for you.
Choose a name that is short, easy to spell, and memorable. Long, hard to spell, forgettable blog names will make it hard for your blog to stand out. You don’t have to choose a name that is only one word long or that has no meaning at all, but try to keep your name as simple as possible.
Purchase a domain and find a web host. Most blog sites will let you have a blog for free, but if you aim to make money, you need to spend money on the domain name, and you’ll need to find a site on which to host it. WordPress offers self-hosting, but there are plenty of other great web hosts you can use too.
Write a few posts before publishing, then write on the regular. You don’t have to fill up your blog with hundreds of posts, but it’s a good idea to get a few pieces of content on there before taking it live. Once you get your blog up and running, you’ll need to post new content regularly. Posting 16 or more times per month could give you three and a half times more traffic than only posting once a week.
Brush up on SEO. SEO is an extremely important part of running a blog and making money. It helps you get in front of your target audience and get found by those who are looking for you. If you aren’t familiar with it already, you can use tools like Moz’s blog to learn basics and get tips and tricks.
Install tools like Google Analytics and Webmaster. Google Analytics and Google’s Webmaster tools will help you keep track of the traffic your blog gets, understand why you’re ranking how you are, and give you insight on how to improve. If you want to grow your blog and business, they’re important tools to have.
Create pages on social. Social media is an extremely powerful tool when it comes to blogging and interacting with your followers. It will enable you to publish your posts on multiple mediums and grow your following even and interact with them more effectively. You should at least create a page on Facebook and Instagram (if not others).
Add ads to your blog. Ads are one of the top ways that bloggers make money. By adding ads to your blog site, you’ll be able to earn a commission or percentage of the money the advertiser makes when someone clicks their ad and makes a purchase.
Start doing affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is another popular way that bloggers earn money through their blog. You can create an agreement with brands and companies to advertise their products for a commission of the sales that your affiliate link generates.
Approach brands for sponsored posts. Sponsored posts are yet another way that bloggers make money through their blog. You can create a partnership with one or a few brands and start advertising their specific products and services in your posts. It’s somewhat similar to affiliate marketing but different in a number of ways.
Start selling products of your own. If you want to add yet another stream of income, you can start selling products like digital guides, eBooks, or even crafts that you make. Selling your products may require some adjustments, but it can help you earn some extra money.
Stick with it. Earning money with a blog takes time. As great as it would be to have money come in instantly, you typically will need to build up a following and credibility before you’ll start to see the money come in. Don’t give up, though—it will all be worth it in the end.
Blogging is an increasingly popular way to make money, but even with all the guides out there, it’s not always easy to know how to do it. By setting up your blog correctly, publishing regular content, and using different methods of making money like ads and affiliate marketing, you will be able to turn your blog into a business and start earning money too.
